Being a Assistant virtual is a rewarding occupation. You get to meet new people, do new things, earn money and have the freedom to do it at your own pace. But you do have a few things to consider before you get started in the virtual world.

1

Assess your Skillsknowing this will be a big benefit when matching up with a new client

Set a schedule – Even though you don’t have a “traditional” job make sure you realize it is still a job.

Post your Schedule – Use a white board, excel spread sheet or a shared calendar. Anything – so that you don’t have to rely on your memory of when events take place. But it’s just as important to make your schedule available to your clients

Get organized – Set up files to keep client work and work information in one place

Set a Client Schedule – This is different from your schedule. You need to have something in place for when a client can contact you and stick to it, also keep track of work to be done along with deadlines

Have a dedicated work space – Sometimes you can work with noise in the background, but you will also need a quite place for many things.

Go the extra mile – Good customer service goes a long way especially in a virtual world

2

Set up a work email – keeping work and personal life separate will make both much easier

Treat Virtual Work as work – This is serious business and should be looked at as the job it is

Are you self-motivated?  Think about it, you are working from home. You can set your own hours.  You don’t have a boss in the cubby next to you or down the hall. But you do have someone depending on you to get the work done.

Your motivation has to come from you. If you are the type of person who knows they have a job to do and gets it done, you will be very successful as a Virtual Assistant. You may find that you thrive in an open environment.

Create your own structure

Being free to work at your own pace is a wonderful thing. But whether you work for a virtual company or are freelance a way to keep you motivated is to build your own structure. That sounds simple doesn’t it? But when you try to put building your own structure in to practice, it can be harder than you think.

You need to have a structured plan in place to keep you on track. There will always be things you have to take care of. That is a given no matter what job you do or where you work. But you need to have guidelines similar to those of a physical office would have.

Being a Assistant virtual is a rewarding occupation. You get to meet new people, do new things, earn money and have the freedom to do it at your own pace. But you have to remember this is still a job. Deadlines need to be met and equipment has to be kept up and running. Having a plan in place will make your job easier, keep your clients happy and you will have a rewarding career for years to come.
